Bots and Autopoiesis

2019 - present
Academic essay, bot making
Presented at Utrecht Universiteit, Hackers and Designers Summer Academy, Control Shift Festival, Garage Museum
Supported by Akademie Schlöss Solitude, Willem de Kooning Academy, Government of Chile

This project started as an academic essay in which I analyse the diverse range of literary Twitter bots, these are automated Twitter accounts that post literary content according to algorithmic programming. I present the context and digital infrastructures that constitute them and evaluate their contribution to the current literary landscape.

Afterwards I got financial support from the Government of Chile (Fondos de Cultura) to carry a comprehensive examination of the bot format, its relation to the concept of autopoiesis and its potential contribution to a theory of automated art. I continued this artistic research and l co-led a series of workshops to examine grammar-generative code in relation to oracular wisdom at the Hackers and Designers Summer Academy, at the Willem de Kooning Academy, and at the Control Shift festival.

In 2021, I continued this research as a resident at Akademie Schlöss Solitude and created a bot of my own to test my findings, the bot produces divinatory texts based on a corpus of my personal dream journaling, it also produces vectorial shapes using coordinates obtained after a geomancy session led by Iranian-Canadian artist Shirim Fahimi. This work was presented at the Magical Cohabitations event organized by Akademie Schlöss Solitude and at KI-Camp 2021, conference organized by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the German Informatics Society.
